Remember the Resurrection

Remember all the miracles God performed through Moses?  They weren't just miracles.  They were signs to everyone that God was communicating to and through Moses.  When Moses said, "Thus says the LORD," they had reason to believe it was true.  Later prophets would also have signs/miracles that would show they were speaking for the LORD, too.  One of the most common signs was a short-term prediction of something miraculous that would happen.  People could watch, then, for that sign to come true.  Then they could know that what the prophet said on behalf of God was true, too.

If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously, so do not be alarmed. (Deuteronomy 18:22)

Jesus was asked for a sign to prove his claims as well.  He claimed quite a bit.  He claimed to be the Son of Man, the Son of God, the Messiah (Christ), and the "I AM" (Yahweh, God).  That was a lot to claim.  People wanted Jesus to prove these things with a sign.

As the crowds increased, Jesus said, "This is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. (Luke 11:29-30)  For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (Matthew 12:40)

When Jesus rose from the dead on the third day, that was his sign.  His prediction of this miracle was correct.  That was his way of confirming that he was speaking for God, just like previous prophets.  He was claiming to be more than a prophet, though.  His resurrection was God's sign that Jesus was who he claimed to be.

Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. (John 20:30-31)
