I've have had conversations with people before who want to justify their specific drink from the silence of Scripture. "That's talking about wine," they've said. "It's not talking about ______." They fill in the blank with their favorite drink like beer, whiskey, and, at times, their favorite drug. Of course, none of these arguments will hold up...at least not with God.
God wants to fill our minds with His Spirit. God wants us to overflow with joy, singing psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. You want the kind of things God wants for your mind? Go to a church service and drink up all you want. Fill your mind with God.
The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh. (Romans 13:12-14 NIV)
Drunkenness (and getting high) is something people do at night. It's something they try to hide. It's something that drives them ever further away from God's will for their lives. That's because our Will is impaired when we get drunk or high. We have difficulty controlling our ability to walk and talk, much less our ability to conform our Will to God's.
The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. (Romans 8:6 NIV)
It's not about wine. It's about your mind.
