Often times, God's call will take us by surprise. We find ourselves asking questions, wondering how all the details will work out. Mary could have been asking this question to make sure that she didn't repeat the mistakes of her ancestor Sarah, who tried to force God's plan and ended up in bitter jealousy. Perhaps Mary was trying to understand timing: "Would this baby be conceived on their wedding night?" Maybe Mary understood what God was saying through Gabriel, but just wanted to hear it with her own ears. Whatever the reason, Mary asked the question. Gabriel was glad to answer.
The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. (Luke 1:35 NIV)
God will empower Mary. She will receive a gift of the Holy Spirit that will empower her to do something she could not do on her own. This was the ministry God wanted Mary to do, so God empowered her to do it. God never leaves us in a lurch here. When God calls us to do something, God empowers us to do it. We always have what we need to do what God calls us to do.
Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail." (Luke 1:36-37 NIV)
How about you? Do you know what God is calling you to do? Do you trust His Spirit to empower you to do it? Are you resting in the power of God? Are you empowered?
