IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776.
The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,
When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
Today is a great day in the history of the United States of America. On this day, 240 years ago, we declared our independence and assumed our place “among the powers of the earth” as separate and equal nation. It is important as citizens of this country to pause and remember one of the most significant events that brought us here. We should also take the time to remember, and thank, the One who brought us here as well.
The LORD now said to Moses, "Send out men to explore the land of Canaan, the land I am giving to the Israelites. Send one leader from each of the twelve ancestral tribes." So Moses did as the LORD commanded him. He sent out twelve men, all tribal leaders of Israel, from their camp in the wilderness of Paran. (Numbers 13:1-3 NLT)
In many ways, we are like the ancient Israelites who were set free from their slavery in Egypt. God brought them out of Egypt and led them to the Promised Land. Now I know that it is becoming less and less popular to mix faith and government these days, but our founding fathers were not nearly as afraid to cross that line as we are. In fact, to them no line seemed to exist.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
Self-evident truths lay the foundation of our reasoning for breaking the bond with England. We are created equal and are endowed by our Creator with Rights that cannot be taken away. Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness lead the list.
How, though, can we be created and endowed by that Creator if no Creator exists; a “scientific fact” taught to our children in the public schools? How can Life be the first Right listed, yet millions of babies are not afforded that Right before they are born; yet alone old enough to defend themselves? How can we tell the world that we are justified in our separation because Nature’s God demands it, yet deny that Natural Laws or Nature’s God exists?
It is good to remember this historic day that changed the course of human events. We must also remember, however, that God played a significant role in this day as well. We invited Him. In the same way the Israelites had the LORD to thank for their freedom, we have the LORD to thank for ours as well. Let’s remember the LORD, celebrate God, and thank Him this Independence Day. After all, He is the only one who was there and remains alive today to thank. Thank you, LORD. God bless America.
