Team Builders Serve

Leadership in God’s Church can be very confusing.  That’s because leadership in God’s Church is not supposed to be like leadership in the world.

A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. (Luke 22:24-27 NIV)

Leadership in the Church is not about power, position, or politics.  It’s about walking with God an helping others do the same.  In these “entry level” leadership roles, team builders start to lead by learning to serve.

But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, 'Friend, move up to a better place.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." (Luke 14:10-11 NIV)

We start learning that it is not about looking important.  It’s not even about being important.  It’s about being effective at helping people walk with God.  That effectiveness grows as we learn to serve.

Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, "Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all." (Mark 9:35 NIV)

How about you?  Do you serve your spouse?  Do you serve your children?  Do you serve others?  Are you learning to lead by serving?
