Remember

Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. (Luke 1:1-2 NIV)

Memories can be powerful.  Many of us can remember exactly where we were when significant events happened throughout history.  The bombing of pearl harbor, the assassinations of John F. Kennedy or Martin Luther King Jr., the first space shuttle being launched or the explosion of Challenger carrying the first teacher who was going to experience space travel, or the twin towers burning and falling on September 11, 2001 all bring back memories for many of us.

For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain. (2 Peter 1:16-18 NIV)

The same was true for the apostles.  They did not talk about Jesus because he was a good guy.  They didn't even talk about him because he was a powerful teacher.  They talked about him, taught what he taught, and even wrote down those memories because they were there.  They heard his teachings.  They benefited from his miracles.  They watched him die and then saw him alive again.  They were there.  Peter talks about one of those experiences he, James, and John had one day.

After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters--one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.) Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: "This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!" Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus. (Mark 9:2-8 NIV)

No one could shake Peter's faith after Jesus rose from the dead and ascended into heaven.  He had encountered the Son of God and he knew it.
