Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do. (Psalms 1:1-3 NLT)
I've spent a lot of time over the years learning different perspectives, teachings and faiths. Through that time, I've learned that walking with God not only makes sense - it just works. I mean, it's always practical. God's way leads to life. Against God always leads to a mess - even death. If there's someone's advice I'm going to listen to, it's Gods. If there's someone I want to spend my time with, it's God. If there's someone's friendship I value, it's God's. I like being friends with God. Life with Him really is awesome.
But not the wicked! They are like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind. They will be condemned at the time of judgment. Sinners will have no place among the godly. For the LORD watches over the path of the godly, but the path of the wicked leads to destruction. (Psalms 1:4-6 NLT)
This friendship with God really has affected my friendships in this world. I've found a wife who truly wants to walk together with God. Our children have seen the benefits that come from being friends with God. My friends...well...it depends on their friendship with God. When they want to hang out and do things that God would like, I'm in. When they want to get together to figure out ways to help more people walk with God, I'm really there. When they want to waste time doing things with no positive eternal significance or value...we tend to part ways. It's really just that simple. My friendship with God drives all my other relationships - just as the Psalmist suggested. When I do things this way, it just works.
