A psalm of Asaph. O my people, listen to my instructions. Open your ears to what I am saying, for I will speak to you in a parable. I will teach you hidden lessons from our past—stories we have heard and known, stories our ancestors handed down to us. (Psalms 78:1-3 NLT)
I like a good story. There's something about listening to a masterful retelling of someone's experience that simply draws me in and leaves me yearning for more. Even the television programs and movies I enjoy the most seem to have a strong story component to them. It seems like I was wired to enjoy stories.
Scripture reminds me that I'm not alone. Sharing information about God was never done in a sterile, scientific fashion in the past. It was always understood in the context of a story. The story included a person, usually additional people, and God. These stories teach us lessons about God and what it means to walk with Him. These stories were never meant just for us. They're meant for us to share.
We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the LORD, about His power and His mighty wonders. For He issued His laws to Jacob; He gave His instructions to Israel. He commanded our ancestors to teach them to their children, so the next generation might know them—even the children not yet born—and they in turn will teach their own children. (Psalms 78:4-6 NLT)
Sharing God's stories with our children will help our children see and experience God. This fundamental truth has permeated our home for years. The result has been blessing after blessing for our family - something I would love your family to experience as well.
Traci, my wife, does an excellent job of explaining how we can share God's story with our children and our children's children in her blog: Building Through God's Word. I would highly recommend checking it out if you haven't already had the pleasure. You can sign up for email delivery as well. Put these concepts into practice. Share His Story with your children.
So each generation should set its hope anew on God, not forgetting His glorious miracles and obeying His commands. (Psalms 78:7 NLT)
