Wisdom from Fear

Where then does wisdom come from? Where does understanding dwell? It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing, concealed even from the birds in the sky. Destruction and Death say, "Only a rumor of it has reached our ears." God understands the way to it and he alone knows where it dwells, for he views the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens. When he established the force of the wind and measured out the waters, when he made a decree for the rain and a path for the thunderstorm, then he looked at wisdom and appraised it; he confirmed it and tested it. And he said to the human race, "The fear of the Lord--that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding." (Job 28:20-28 NIV)

When raising our children through the early years, Traci used to be upset at me because I had the "Dad Voice."  She would be trying to get their attention to clean up or eat dinner or something and they simply wouldn't listen to her.  I'd walk in the room and simply say, "Hey!" They would stop and pay attention.  (Of course I said it loud enough to be heard over the din coming from their own mouths and actions, but Traci could speak just as loudly with no response.)  We didn't use this tactic very often, but it was nice to know I could get their attention this way if there was real danger involved.

God uses tactics that invoke fear at times.  It also gets our attention.  He does it to warn us of real danger that is involved.  When we jump in fear, He has our attention.  Then we will listen to the rest.  This is why, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom."

Are you paying attention to Him?
Are you listening?

  1. Hello Pete,

    I had this on my calendar last Friday, so it was very appropriate when I received your Garden Walk blog on Monday:
    "Search for [wisdom] as for hidden treasure;
    then you will understand the fear of the Lord." (Proverbs 2:4-5)

    Since, I wanted to see more of the scriptures; I looked up the NASB version and found this:
    Make your ear attentive to wisdom, Incline your heart to understanding;
    For if you cry for discernment, Lift your voice for understanding;
    If you seek her as silver And search for her as for hidden treasures;
    Then you will discern the fear of the LORD
    And discover the knowledge of God. (Proverbs 2:2-5)

    I loved that you ended in this scripture verse "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom". It is one of my favorite ones to hear, but I never can remember it. I am praying that by writing this, it will stick to in my mind. When I went to look up that verse, I found a bunch of scripture which reference exactly that; some of which are:

    "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom;
    A good understanding have all those who do His commandments; His praise endures forever." (Psalm 111:10)

    "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
    And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." (Proverbs 9:10)

    How sweet it would be, if we could only fear the Lord and remember to keep His commandments. It reminds me that I don’t have to fear the evil one, because if I fear the Lord, I will receive the understanding and discernment needed to fight the evil one.

    In the book of Job we learn :
    "And to man He said, 'Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom;
    And to depart from evil is understanding’.”
    Job 28:28

    I think I could go on but I will end with this one:
    "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge;
    Fools despise wisdom and instruction."
    Proverbs 1:7

    Nobody likes to be being called a fool. I think my name is on that list, so I will work on paying attention and my ears open for His calling.

    Thank you for your service and thank you for all you do for God’s kingdom.

    Your sister in Christ
    Shirley
