The Apostles

The Foundation of God’s Church begins with Jesus Christ: the cornerstone.  We saw yesterday that it includes the Law, Prophets, and Psalms – what we call the Old Testament.  God doesn’t stop there, though.

Therefore also the Wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’ (Luke 11:49 ESV)

Disciples are followers who listen to the teachings of their Rabbi (teacher) and follow in his steps.  Apostles are messengers who are sent out to deliver the message for someone.

In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. And when day came, he called his disciples and chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles: (Luke 6:12-13 ESV)

To trust Jesus means that we trust his hand-picked messengers.  They were sent out with the message about Jesus.  They wrote down their accounts of Jesus.  They wrote letters, teaching us to be followers of Jesus.  These writings became our New Testament today.

This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles, knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. (2 Peter 3:1-3 ESV)

How about you?  Do you trust Jesus’ hand-picked messengers?  Do you read the books of the New Testament?  Is the New Testament a part of your foundation today?
