Served as King

As the time of King David's death approached, he gave this charge to his son Solomon: "I am going where everyone on earth must someday go. Take courage and be a man.(1 Kings 2:1-2 NLT)

David is ready to go home.  He has enjoyed a long and eventful life here as a boy, a man, and a king.  Now he is ready to pass down some final wisdom to his son, Solomon, who is anointed as the next king of Israel.  What does he consider the most important thing to share?

Observe the requirements of the LORD your God, and follow all His ways. Keep the decrees, commands, regulations, and laws written in the Law of Moses so that you will be successful in all you do and wherever you go.(1 Kings 2:3 NLT)

Walk with The LORD.  That was the most important instruction David had to pass down to Solomon.  Walk with The LORD and things will go well with you.  David’s legacy is filled with ups and downs – strengths and weaknesses.  Now, David tries to put his whole life in perspective for his son.  The best moments in David’s life were the times he walked with The LORD.  The same can be true for Solomon as he serves as the new king.

If you do this, then the LORD will keep the promise He made to me. He told me, 'If your descendants live as they should and follow Me faithfully with all their heart and soul, one of them will always sit on the throne of Israel.' (1 Kings 2:4 NLT)

How about you?  Is your life filled with ups and downs – strengths and weaknesses?  As you look back over your life, do you see that the best moments were those when you walked with The LORD?  Are you passing this down from generation to generation?  What will be your legacy?
