...through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. (2 Peter 1:3 NIV)
Unlimited Divine Power is no good unless we know how to harness it. God promises to provide the very power of God but only when it is used for God’s purposes. We need to use the power in the way it is intended to be used. When we don’t, it’s like trying to use a power drill by manually rotating it into the wood. It just doesn’t work. How do we learn how to tap into God’s power? Simple. We need to learn God’s design. The knowledge of God will tell show us how.
Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. (2 Peter 1:20-21 NIV)
God spoke with people in the past, gave them instructions, praised those who did well, and warned those who were not doing well. The people who carried these messages from God were called prophets. Prophets were simply people who spoke the truth from God. When you listened to a prophet, you started to gain the knowledge of God.
But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them--bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping. (2 Peter 2:1-3 NIV)
Many of the true prophets have their stories and messages captured in the pages of Scripture. Some of the false prophets are found there, too, along with the results of their rebellion against God. When we read Scripture, we see how God interacts with people, tries to lead them into the right path, and how God deals with them when they don’t. When we read Scripture, we gain knowledge of God.
They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. (1 John 4:5-6 NIV)
How about you? Do you read, listen to, watch, or sing Scripture? Does it help you gain knowledge of God?
