Spirit Power

When we walk by the Spirit, we persevere through the things that try to separate us from God. This takes will power, strength, and faith that God can get us through it all. In some ways, it feels like an exercise routine where we build up our spiritual muscles to get through each day in life.

You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:6-8 NIV)

The thing that is wrong with that picture, though, is that we, by ourselves, are powerless against the enemy's schemes. God, however, is all powerful. What we really need, then, is not a better spiritual workout routine. What we need is Jesus Christ, both his saving work and his Spirit.

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. (Romans 5:1-2 NIV)

We don't boast in our spiritual exercises and resulting power. We boast in the power of God who dwells within us. Every good thing we do in this life is done through the power of God's Spirit, who is given to us for just that reason.

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. (James 1:12 NIV)

When we finally reach the end of this life (or this era, whichever comes first), we will enjoy the crown of life that God promises to give us.

So, how about you? Do you try to get your spiritual power from spiritual workout routines? Or do you draw your strength and power from the all-powerful God who dwells in you?
