Simple Math and Greed

You must distribute the land among the clans by sacred lot and in proportion to their size. A larger portion of land will be allotted to each of the larger clans, and a smaller portion will be allotted to each of the smaller clans. The decision of the sacred lot is final. In this way, the portions of land will be divided among your ancestral tribes. (Numbers 33:54 NLT)

My daughter enjoys watching old episodes of "Murder, She Wrote."  It's a murder mystery show where an English Teacher writes murder mysteries and, of course, gets pulled into "real life cases" that she helps solve.

I'm reminded just how greedy we all are as I watch some of these shows with her.  Money is a very common motive for murder, at least for the script-writers.  People kill for jewelery, inheritances, and life insurance money.  They always seem to justify their actions, believing they should be entitled to more money because of this reason or that.

The Israelites were about to enter the promised land - the land that the LORD was giving them.  He made it quite clear and simple for them.  The more people there are, the more land they get.  It's just a matter of simple math.

Wouldn't life be a whole lot easier if we didn't desire more than the simple math says we need?
